Good Shepherd Convent is a school and community centre affiliated with the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, a Catholic religious order founded in 1835. The Congregation’s mission is to serve the marginalised, particularly women and children, through education, care, and advocacy.

Mission Milestones

1924

Arrival in Chennai at Luz Church, at the invitation of Bishop De Castro. Beginning of the Good Shepherd mission in Madras.

1925

Arrival of Home Girls marking the commencement of the shepherding mission.

1929

Industrial School established.

1929

Establishment of the first Good Shepherd house at Moorat’s Garden, Nungambakkam – creating space for expansion and deeper service.

1942

Temporary relocation to Yercaud due to ongoing war. The Cambridge system of education followed at Good Shepherd Convent School.

1949

Construction of the School Building completed and blessed by Rev.Fr. Murphy SJ.

1953

Nursery School Building inaugurated.

1955

Launch of Marian Home – safe home to provide protection and skill training for young girls, promoting dignity and independence.

1966

Blessing of the High School Building by His Excellency Bishop Carvalho.

1969

The Chapel blessed by His Grace Mgr. Arulappa, Archbishop of Madras Mylapore.

1975

Inauguration and blessing of the new Auditorium to commemorate the Golden Jubilee.

1977

Priyavanam, a centre for slum children was established and blessed by Fr. Murphy SJ.

1986

Permanent recognition for Std. I – X granted to ‘Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai – 6’.

1991

Permanent Recognition for Classes 11 and 12 of Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School granted.

1996

Founding of Mottukal Shelter Home, a safe haven for girls and children from slum communities, offering education, care, and holistic development.

2000

Roshini Nivas Hostel established to provide support for young women from marginalized backgrounds pursuing education or employment.

2020

Blessing of Good Shepherd Tailoring centre.

2022

Inauguration of the new Junior School building.

2024

Centenary Celebration! Inauguration of the Centenary School, a co-ed institution under the CISCE curriculum, committed to inclusive, value-based education for all children.

2025

Centenary Valedictory – Renewing the Call, Reimagining the Mission.
